Obituary for James S. Calender

James "Jimmy" Samuel Calender, 89, of Voorhees, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home on June 12, 2018. He entered into eternal life surrounded by his loving family and his faithful collie, Abigail.

James was born on February 19, 1929 in Carthage, NY. He was the son of the late Savas Christos Kalenderoglou (Sam Calender) and Olga Pashalides Calender, both Greek immigrants. James graduated from Carthage High School in Carthage, NY, and Temple School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, PA. He and his wife of 50 years, Diana Rae Bell, were married on February 17, 1968 in the Grace Episcopal Church of Carthage.

James is survived by his beloved wife Diana; his daughter Rebekah S. Doyle and her husband Anthony of Wynnewood, PA; his brother Christopher S. Calender and wife Kively, along with his sister Helen Calender Thomas all of Watertown, NY; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, James was predeceased by his infant son Stephen James Calender along with his sisters Mary S. Calender and Anne Calender Tinsley both of Watertown, NY.

With his brother Chris, he formerly owned and operated the Medical Center Pharmacy in Watertown, NY. He had been the manager of CVS pharmacies in both Merchantville and Cherry Hill, NJ. He retired at the age of 79 as the manager of the Acme Sav-On Pharmacy in Voorhees, NJ and continued to be an active member of the Pharmaceutical Association of America. Mr. Calender was extremely passionate about his work and loved helping members of his community in any way possible.

Throughout his life, James was an active environmentalist. He served on the Environmental Board for Voorhees Township and made positive impacts in his local environment through such changes as championing a plan to strategically plant trees throughout the area. He was also a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA).

Mr. Calender's family, friends and neighbors request that you continue his legacy by planting trees in his memory in lieu of other expressions of sympathy. Services will be scheduled at a later date at the convenience of his family.
